Route 66: The Road

Throughout the years many travelers have ventured across the United States on the historic “Mother Road – Route 66”.

The historic “Mother Road” starts in Chicago, Illinois and travels through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending in Santa Monica, California.

We at Route 66 Harley-Davidson are fortunate to have met many travelers from the United States and from around the world who are reliving the days gone by and traveling the “Mother Road”.

Be Safe and Happy Traveling along Route 66!

John Steinbeck in his novel, Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, was the first to refer to Route 66 as “Mother Road.”

We took a wonderful trip down Route 66 with some friends, stopping along the way to visit the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma and the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma before heading West.

This picture of Jim and "Ruby" was taken outside of Oatman, Arizona during the Laughlin River Run during April of 1999. Vicki Boyd.

This pic was taken by me on during 2005 when we went for a snack between Chandler and OKC. Check the place out the spare ribs are good. My bike is the 2005 V-Rod. The other bikes are owned by Lincoln county locals. My V-Rod is based in Lincoln County near Oklahoma City and is always ready for me to ride when I am back in the USA from New Zealand.

Here is a recent picture taken along “The Mother Road” at Chain of Rocks Bridge Rest Area between Illinois and Missouri. Of course the old Chain of Rocks bridge no longer carries highway traffic but is now part of the metro area bicycling trail. You can also walk across it, have a picnic lunch on it and watch the mighty Mississippi roll by. I still remember crossing it in a car as a kid with my parents. It is great that it has been preserved.

This picture was taken just outside of Miami, OK in late March of this year. There is a small section of the original Route 66 road bed just East of Miami, OK. It is hard to find and now just an old country road, but you'll find people stopped on it, like we did, to take pictures. We were coming back from the "Vintage Iron Museum" in Miami. If you haven't been to it yet, you need to see it. They have one of Steve McQueen's motorcycles there, along with a lot of other neat displays, including old Triumphs, Mathless, BSA's.

P.S. That's a deer antler on my left knee, found along old Route 66.

Here's pictures from Pontiac, Illinois, the Big Texan Steak House and the Cadillac Ranch, Texas. All of these places are designated points on Historic Route 66. I made sure the bike was also in the pic! We shipped our bike from Toronto to Phoeni, AZ and rode up through Prescott, Jerome, on to Utah (Four Corners) and Durango, CO, to Santa Fe and the Turquoise Trail. We then went to Winslow AZ and started heading back east on Route 66 through NM, TX, OK, MO, IL. We went on to Milwaukee and the Harley-Davidson Museum and then back through Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo and home! I snapped over 2000 pix on the back of the bike. Our iron 'Horse With No Name' took us across the desert, up and down mountain roads, and through mesas. It was an amazing trip on which we met incredible people and saw the most beautiful countryside in the world from the best road side perspective. The roads were dry, the skies were sunny and the air was sweet. No where and at no time was it more apparent to us that it is never about the destination, it is always about the adventures along the way! Can't wait to get on the road again!

We enjoyed the scenery on our road trip during the summer of 2009 while traveling parts of Route 66.

The Route 66 H.O.G. Chapter along with the Claremore Elks Lodge holds an Annual Toy Run every November along Route 66 to gather toys for distribution by the Claremore Elks Lodge.
